Our Story

In 1990, when the world turned upside down for Kashmiri Pandits, we lost more than just our homes. We lost our sense of belonging, our livelihoods, and, for many of our sisters, their dreams. But like the mighty chinar, we refused to be uprooted.

In 2018, five Kashmiris—Dr. Shakun Malik, Dr. Rajesh Mattoo, Reena Moza, Renu Tickoo Wokhlu, and Surabhi Bhan Kotru—came together with a vision. They saw the untapped potential in our displaced women and knew that by empowering them, we could lift entire families out of adversity.

HemAth is dedicated to rekindling the strength of displaced Kashmiri women. Our mission is to:

  • Preserve and promote Kashmiri cultural heritage
  • Foster economic independence through skill development
  • Nurture holistic well-being and community resilience

Vision

A world where every Kashmiri woman, regardless of her circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to her community’s prosperity.

Our Team: The Pillars of HemAth

Shakun Malik
President, Founder & CEO

A native of Srinagar, Kashmir Dr. Malik’s journey from a displaced Kashmiri to a highly accomplished oncologist inspires our mission. Her vision and leadership drive HemAth’s commitment to empowering Kashmiri women.

Dr. Rajesh Mattoo
Vice President & Treasurer

Born and raised in Srinagar, Kashmir With a Ph.D. in Ecology and an MPA in Healthcare Administration, Dr. Mattoo brings a unique blend of scientific rigor and administrative expertise to our financial management.

Reena Moza
Director

a native of Srinagar, Kashmir, holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Kashmir. She relocated to San Francisco, California, USA in 1985.

Renu Tickoo Wokhlu
Director

a native of Kashmir, experienced the exodus first-hand, subsequently residing in Jammu before moving to Texas in 2001. As an engineer in the semiconductor industry, she has built a successful professional career.

Surabhi Bhan Kotru
Director

born and brought up in Delhi, is a finance professional who relocated to the United States in 2011. Since then, she has actively engaged with various non-profit organizations, particularly those focused on supporting children.

Renu Hakim
Secretary

originally from Srinagar, Kashmir, was part of the Kashmiri Pandit Exodus in 1990 when she and her family relocated to Jammu. In 2002, she moved to Hong Kong, where she developed interest in Early Childhood Education.

Ambika Raina
Education Specialist

A former school principal, Ambika leads our educational initiatives with passion and experience.

Karuna Dhar Munshi
Wellness Program Lead

An Art of Living teacher, Karuna spearheads our wellness initiatives, including yoga and meditation programs.

Priya Bhat
Director of operations

Hailing from Jammu, she holds an MBA in HR and IT from the Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET).

Rainoo Raina
Team Leader Athoor and Earings Project

Rainoo became a part of HemAth in 2021 in order to empower the KP women. She ls the group leader of athoor making.

Shakuntala Koul Bhat
Team leader Tektal group

Shakuntala is working in a reputed goods transport company (NITCO) in accounts since 2008.

Sonu Bhatt
Team leader Kashmiri spices project

she has been an active volunteer of Yaiks and HemAth organizations.

Dr. Meena Munshi
Development Programs Specialist

With decades of experience in designing development programs, Dr. Munshi advises on our inclusive growth strategies.

Kamlesh Munshi
Data Analytics Expert

Kamlesh’s expertise in data analysis helps us measure and improve our impact.

Priya Bhat,
Director of Operations

an MBA graduate from Jammu with experience in HR and IT, currently serves as the Director of Operations at HemAth. She credits the three-month Wate Havuk program for significant personal and professional growth, expressing gratitude for the mentorship received from leaders like Shakun and Sharda.

Ambica Saproo

originally from Anantnag, Kashmir, holds a postgraduate degree in Microbiology from Guru Nanak Dev University. After participating in the Wate Havuk Program, which taught her patience and perseverance, she secured a position as a Technical Executive in a pharmaceutical company in Hyderabad.

Sharun Koul

a Computer Engineering graduate, gained clarity about his goals through the WATE HAVUK program. The program’s guidance helped him hone his skills, leading to a job offer at Mastercard as a Software Engineer Level 1.

Divya Pandita

Her participation in the Wate Havuk program broadened her knowledge base through user interactions, improving her understanding of language and behavior. This experience enhanced her ability to provide relevant responses and contributed to the advancement of conversational AI technology.

Neha Kaw

an MSc and B.Ed graduate working as a teacher in Jagti Township, credits the Wate Havuk program for significantly improving her technical knowledge and confidence. The program led to an increase in her salary and an upgraded role at her school.

Chetan Bhat

with a master’s in engineering and 8 years of work experience, found new motivation through the Wate Havuk program. The program helped him reevaluate himself, restructure his goals, and cultivate a positive outlook, leading to professional certifications and personal growth.

Meenakshi Raina

returning to her profession after a 12-year gap, found crucial support and guidance through the Wate Havuk program. The mentorship helped her regain confidence, improve professional productivity, and prepare to face new challenges in her rapidly changing field.

Vanishka Bhagat:

an MSc in Food Science and Technology graduate working as a QA Chemist at Coca-Cola, found personal and professional growth through the Wate Havuk program. Her mentor, Asha, helped her become more confident and courageous, guiding her towards achieving her goals.
